Nationwide News understands the police have launched an investigation into allegations that the mayor of Portmore, Leon Thomas, assaulted three women during that stormy meeting at the headquarters of the Portmore Municipal Corporation on Tuesday evening.
A video, which has been shared widely on social media, where Mayor Thomas appears to lunge at a woman and rip a placard from her hands, forms part of the investigation.
On his way to confronting the woman, Mayor Thomas appeared to barge another female with his shoulder, causing her to stumble. It’s understood both women suffered injuries during the fracas.
The St. Catherine South police is reportedly probing the incident.
It’s understood that a third alleged physical confrontation between Mayor Thomas and a woman at the meeting also has the attention of the police.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Mayor Thomas moved to defend himself.
He admitted to removing placards from the hands of some attendees at the meeting but says he did so to restore order and de-escalate what he described as a volatile situation.
