The caucus of Jamaica Labour Party councillors in the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation has called on Mayor Andrew Swaby to resign.
Swaby is chairman of the municipal corporation and mayor of Kingston.
The caucus says it has taken note of what it says is emerging information which contradicts claims from Mayor Swaby that he has been impartial in the distribution of resources and benefits.
They say leaked conversations suggest the mayor’s administrative team has been instructing People’s National Party caretakers to investigate the political leaning of people who have approached the local authority for taxpayer funded assistance.
The caucus says the approach is repugnant and contradicts the principles of fairness and impartiality, which the mayor says has characterised his leadership.
The councillors say in light of the confirmed review by the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency, MOCA, and a raid by another anti-corruption agency, they have lost trust in the leadership of Mayor Swaby.
Mayor Swaby has denied that he acted improperly in the distribution of funds.
