PNP Welcomes Court Decision Striking Out JLP Election Petitions

The Opposition People’s National Party, PNP, is welcoming the Supreme Court’ decision to strike out two election petition cases brought by the Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, following the February 26 local government election. 

In a statement on Thursday night, Spokesperson on Information and Public Communication, Nekeisha Burchell, described the cases as meritless.

The divisions at the centre of the cases were the Kintyre Division of the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation and the Ginger Ridge Division in the St. Catherine Municipal Corporation.

Viviene Brown Bond won in the Kintyre Division for the PNP over the JLP’s Kelvin Clarke And Ralston Wilson was the winner in Ginger Ridge over the JLP’s Jeremiah Edwards.

The Supreme Court dismissed the Wilson and Edwards applications on several grounds, including that it was an abuse of process.

Ms Burchell says the ruling is another black eye for the Holness government in its long list of constitutional challenges.

She’s warning the JLP to be more circumspect in its approach to the Constitution and the rule of law.
