Opposition Spokesperson on Water, Ian Hayles, is calling on the National Water Commission, NWC, to address the severe water crisis affecting numerous parishes.
Mr. Hayles says following the passage of Hurricane Beryl, residents in parishes such as St. Ann, Trelawny and Manchester remain without water.
He says his call stems from the escalating frustration and hardship faced by residents without water. He says the NWC cannot continue to attribute the shortages solely to the Jamaica Public Service Company, JPS.
Mr. Hayles says contingency plans must exist to address situations such as the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
Mr. Hayles is calling on the NWC to consider his alternative strategies to ensure residents without water are adequately supplied.
These include the deployment of backup generators to at treatment plants, increased frequency of water trucking to affected communities and partnering with local authorities to identify and prioritise affected areas.
Mr. Hayles is also calling on Minister with responsibility for Water, Senator Matthew Samuda, to convene a meeting with the NWC and JPS to determine when normalcy can be restored to affected areas.
