Opposition spokesperson on energy, Phillip Paulwell, says the next People’s National Party, PNP, administration will include widespread installation of solar panels in poorer communities as part of their plans to lower energy costs across the island.
Paulwell was reacting to the announcement of a planned reduction of general consumption tax, GCT, on electricity bills.
On Sunday, it was announced GCT will be reduced on electricity from 15 per cent to 7 per cent by March, 2025.
Finance minister, Fayval Williams, says the government will be giving up approximately $1.7 billion in revenue to facilitate the reduction.
But on Tuesday, the PNP says the promised tax reduction is aimed at benefiting the wealthy. Opposition leader, Mark Golding, says his administration will bring credible plans to lower energy costs in the country.
Mr. Paulwell says a presentation of these plans was recently made to the shadow cabinet.
