The opposition People’s National Party, PNP, is rubbishing claims that the party is responsible for young people’s negative perceptions of politics.
The assertion was made by member of parliament for South East Clarendon, Pearnel Charles Jr., as he addressed a Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, conference in Portland on Sunday.
The PNP has issued a statement calling Mr Charles Jr.’s comments an attempt to deflect from the core issues impacting Jamaica’s youth and the broader society.
The PNP says the comments were both misleading and unproductive in attributing the disengagement of young people to political narratives.
According to the PNP, the JLP should instead focus on addressing the systemic challenges facing the country today, many of which it claims have worsened under successive Holness administrations.
The PNP outlined that these areas of concern include youth unemployment, access to quality education and opportunities for meaningful engagement in national development.
