Opposition leader and People’s National Party, PNP, president, Mark Golding, has called on mayor of May Pen, the Jamaica Labour Party’s, JLP, Joel Williams, to step down following last Friday’s by-election in the Aenon Town division in Clarendon.

Speaking at a media briefing at the PNP’s Old Hope Road Headquarters in St. Andrew on Tuesday, Mr. Golding says the PNP councillors should be allowed to decide the mayor.

The PNP’s Delroy Dawson defeated the JLP’s Suzette Barton by a margin of 54 votes in the Aenon Town division. The result meant that there is a tie in the Clarendon Municipal Corporation, with the PNP winning the popular vote.

But Mayor Williams says based on his interpretation of the law, he has no obligation to step down.
