The opposition People’s National Party, PNP, is calling for heightened vigilance and impartiality amid concerns about what it says are acts of intimidation and vote-buying ahead of Friday’s by-elections.
The PNP made the appeal in a letter to police commissioner, Dr. Kevin Blake on Thursday.
The PNP claims thugs in the Lyssons area of St. Thomas, tore down party flags and fired shots on Thursday. It says these actions threaten the sanctity of the democratic process.
Additionally, the PNP alleges plans are underway to engage in vote-buying to sway the result of the by elections in the Aenon Town and Morant Bay divisions.
The party is urging the high command to ensure police, particularly those from the Protective Services Division, act with fairness, professionalism and vigilance in identifying and addressing these breaches.
The PNP says any perception of bias or inaction could erode confidence in the electoral process.
The PNP has reiterated its readiness to collaborate with the authorities to safeguard the democratic rights of the Jamaican people and ensure free and fair elections.
