PNP Calls for Social Media Policy for Gov’t Officials

8 months ago 30

Opposition Spokesperson on Information and Public Communication, Nekeisha Burchell, is calling on the government to implement policies regarding the conduct of public officials on social media.

Her call comes in light of an incident in which pictures posted on the Instagram story of Member of Parliament for East Central St. Catherine, Alando Terrelonge, blocked out the faces of former Prime Ministers PJ Patterson and Portia Simpson Miller.

The State Minister says he did not make the posts and adds that they were not in keeping with his style of posting.

Mr. Terrelonge says he was advised that the stories were posted by one of his team members who has access to his social media accounts.

Miss Burchell says this incident strengthens the opposition’s stance on the introduction of social media policies.

Miss Burchell believes the use of verified accounts for government purposes separate from the the personal accounts of a public official is the way forward.
