Phillips Pleads for Leniency for Compliant Ride-Shares

Opposition Spokesperson on Transport, Mikael Phillips, says portfolio minister Daryl Vaz must ensure that those taxi companies that are compliant with the rules set by the Transport Authority, are not punished, amid moves to regulate the ride sharing sub sector.

Mr. Phillips says at least two companies have indicated that they possess the relevant licenses under the Transport Act.

He adds that another company has contacted him, stating that the ban resulted in their company losing a major contract.

Mr. Phillips says that as early as two years ago, he raised alarm about the need for a regulatory framework for ride sharing companies. He believes that despite police concerns, it is the government’s responsibility to respond in a way that is fair.

He says the government must regulate in such a manner that compliant companies are not placed at a disadvantage.

Mr. Phillips says any regulations for the ride share business must include amendments that define operational standards and service provision while also speaking to the training and licensing of operators and drivers.
