Phillips Critical of Govt’s Failure to Enforce Ride-Share Ban

6 months ago 28

Opposition Spokesman on Transport, Mikael Phillips, is criticising the government for its failure to properly restrict ridesharing applications from operating in the island.

Ten days after announcing that he would recommend the immediate ban of ride-hailing apps, Transport Minister Daryl Vaz advised that the ban failed to materialise after telecommunication providers failed to accede to a request from the government.

Mr Phillips says he’s disappointed.

The ride-share apps that should have been banned include Uber, inDrive, 876OnTheGo, Lyft and Ride Jamaica.

Minister Vaz says the government has taken the decision to allow the entities to continue operating while his ministry develops a framework to properly regulate their operations in the country.

The Opposition spokesman is suggesting several measures that can be put in place, until the proper legislation is developed.
