Football Association, FA, chief executive Mark Bullingham has confirmed that Mason Greenwood has formally requested to switch to Jamaica’s national team.
That’s according to a report from The Athletic.
Greenwood has not featured for England since making his debut against Iceland in September 2020 and the formal request to switch means he is no longer eligible for selection. The Athletic reported this process had begun last August.
Thomas Tuchel will name his first England squad next week ahead of the World Cup qualifiers against Albania (March 21) and Latvia (March 24) at Wembley.
“My understanding is he (Greenwood) has asked to switch,” Bullingham told selected media, including The Athletic, on Thursday. “That’s happened formally, so he wouldn’t be able to (be selected) because you can only switch once.”
Despite making a senior appearance for England, Greenwood is allowed to change his representation because he was under 21 years old at the time he played in Iceland.
The striker, now playing for Marseille after leaving Manchester United for an initial fee of €27.6million (£23.1m; $29.8m) in the summer, has scored 15 goals in 24 matches this season.
Asked whether Greenwood requested to play for Jamaica because it was indicated to him that he would no longer be considered for England duty, Bullingham said: “No, we actually didn’t have that communication.”
It had been decided that Greenwood would resume his career away from Old Trafford after the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the case against him for attempted rape, assault, and coercive control after “a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction”. Greenwood denied all the allegations against him.
