Defending Corporate Area High School Championships winners Kingston College (KC) and Excelsior High raced out the blocks to end day-one action as leaders in the boys’ and girls’ standings respectively at the Ashenheim Stadium yesterday.
KC opened a 23-point lead after a full day of action as they stand atop the standings with 123 points.
Trailing behind the leaders are the usual suspects with Calabar High second on 100, just ahead of Jamaica College (JC) who rounded out the top three with 98.
In the girls’ standings Excelsior have taken charge with 142 points, with Wolmer’s Girls second on 121.5.
Convent of Mercy Academy (Alpha) also enjoyed a strong start to their campaign as they sit third with 116 points tallied.
KC picked up some early points in the competition as they saw heavy success in the 1500m as Julius Itubo won the Class Three event in a meet record four minutes, 12.71 seconds while Peter Njuguna took the Class Two title in 3:57.43.
Calabar would disrupt their sweep of the event, however, as they claimed a one-two finish in Class One as Odane Davidson clocked a personal best of 4:07.69 for the gold medal, ahead of teammate Justin Webb who took silver in 4:08.40.
In the 100m finals, KC picked up valuable points across the board as they medalled in all but one of the classes.
They took the Class Four title with Kemanic Edwards winning in 11.38, ahead of the Wolmer’s pair of Ajani Lumley, 11.48, and Joshua McWilliams, 11.51.
JC had back-to-back wins in Class Three and Class Two as Kai Kristian Kelly took the Class Three title in 11.08 while Kaeden Herbert won Class Two in 10.81.
Herbert’s win came down to wire as second-place Ronaldo Francis of Calabar also finished in 10.81. Herbert crossed the line just five-thousandths of a second ahead of Francis.
St George’s College’s Tyreece Foreman took the Class One title in 10.44, edging out Excelsior’s Malike Nugent, 10.56, and KC’s Nyrone Wade, 10.60.
FIELD DOMINANCE
On the girls’ side, Excelsior saw much of their points coming from their dominance in the field events finals.
They picked up 16 points in the Class One long jump with a one-two finish as Kimeka Smith took gold with a meet record jump of 5.74 metres, leading teammate Shelley-Ann Taylor who took silver with 5.49m.
The Mountain View Road-based school replicated that form in the Class One discus with another 16-point haul as team captain Najhada Seymoure took gold with 46.24m, ahead of teammate Gianna Clayton, 44.93m.
Excelsior also claimed the Class Three title as Zoeyann Plummer won gold with a throw of 37.00m, ahead of Alpha’s Tashanti Fearon, 35.02m.
Enola Myers, also of Excelsior, took home the bronze medal with a mark of 29.58m.
In the 100m finals, Wolmer’s Abigail Wolfe was in a league of her own as she won the Class One title in 11.75, beating out Alpha’s Tashay Faulkner, 12.07, and Excelsior’s Shakira Rhoden, 12.18.
Wolmer’s also dominated the Class Two final, with Natrece East setting a meet record of 11.78 ahead of her teammate Tianna Marshall who finished second in 12.04.
In Classes Three and Four, Alpha reigned supreme as Seana Wilson took the Class Three title in 12.07 while Philipa James took Class Four in 12.47.
