KSAMC Defends Move to Request Audit into Hiring & Paying of Municipal Police

Chairman of the KSAMC’s Finance Committee, Dennis Gordon, says the Auditor General is best placed to determine if the hiring and remuneration process for municipal police officers employed by the corporation was above board.

He says the hiring of the officers did not come before the Finance Committee for approval.

Mr. Gordon says a review of the KSAMC’s accounts shows about $80 million spent on salaries for employees who were hired under circumstances described as irregular.

According to Mr. Gordon, the bulk of this money was used to employ municipal police officers who were never trained. He contends they were JLP activists.

Mr. Gordon says the hiring of the municipal officers did not accord with the usual process in the 40-member strong KSAMC.

Mr. Gordon says a request for the audit to be conducted will be made at the next meeting of the Finance Committee set for April 25.

Deputy mayor of the KSAMC, the JLP’s Delroy Williams, has welcomed the audit.
