“I Remain a Committed Member of the JLP” – Winston Ennis

Councillor-elect for the Waterloo Division, Winston Ennis says his utterances in a leaked voice note that he was stepping away from the JLP were expressed in the heat of the moment.

The longstanding councillor and chairman of the JLP’s Area Council 1 issued a statement Wednesday morning withdrawing his utterances.

In a leaked voice note on Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Ennis indicated that he would be stepping away from the JLP and going independent.

He cited disrespect from the JLP as the reason for his departure.

But in a statement on Wednesday morning, Mr. Ennis walked back his decision. He says his indication to step away from the JLP was expressed in the heat of the moment in a JLP affiliated WhatsApp group.

According to Mr. Ennis, he was surprised that the voice note was leaked and is disappointed that personal discussions made its way into the public domain.

Councillor Ennis says he has not sent a formal letter withdrawing his membership in the JLP.

Ennis says he met Tuesday night with members of his division and party workers and is committed to resolving internally any issue which might have arisen that led to his earlier sentiment.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ennis says he remains committed to the view that his party is best placed to govern Jamaica at both the local and central government levels.

He’s also cautioning people who are making personal statements in the heat of the moment and meant for internal discussion, to be careful about the domain used to express themselves and the words chosen.
