⁠Golding Renews Call for Holness to Resign as Prime Minister

Leader of the Opposition, Mark Golding is reiterating his call for Andrew Holness to step aside as prime minister.

Speaking on Duke Street in Kingston to a crowd of PNP supporters on Tuesday, moments after the plug was effectively pulled on his contribution to the budget debate, Mark Golding said the prime minister’s integrity is compromised.

Mr. Golding completed his budget presentation outside Gordon House after Deputy House Speaker, Heroy Clarke, adjourned Tuesday’s session prematurely due to the lack of a quorum.

Government members walked out the House in protest at comments made by Mr. Golding about the spousal relationship between Prime Minister Andrew Holness and House Speaker Juliet Holness.

He suggested that the relationship compromised Mrs. Holness’ ability to act impartially.

According to the Standing Orders, 17 MPs must be in the chamber to form a quorum, otherwise the Speaker is duty bound to adjourn the proceedings.

The walkout by government members left only the opposition members in place, with their 14 MPs not enough to form said quorum.

Mark Golding said Tuesday’s events prove that the Holness administration is not a government of integrity.
