Dr Peter Phillips Reflects on 30 Years as an MP

Member of Parliament for East Central St. Andrew, Dr. Peter Phillips, says his greatest regret is failing to significantly boost Jamaica’s advancement from a low-income economy.

Dr. Phillips made the point while speaking recently on Nationwide at Five.

Dr. Phillips marked his 30th year in the House of Representatives last week.

He served as opposition leader between 2017 and 2020. He also served as finance minister between 2012 and 2016.

For his work over that period, he is credited with helping to stabilise Jamaica’s economy and contributing to the country’s healthy fiscal position.

The former finance minister, is also troubled by the lack of progress in education.

Meanwhile, Dr. Phillips says his proudest achievement in politics is advancing the issue of land titling for vulnerable Jamaicans.

At the constituency level, Dr. Phillips says his focus has always been on the provision of opportunities in the area of education.
