Commentators: Golding Must Outline $3m Income Tax Threshold Plan in Budget Presentation

Political commentator, Helene Davis Whyte, says she expects Opposition Leader, Mark Golding, to tell Jamaicans how a PNP administration would raise the income tax threshold to $3 million, when he makes his contribution to the budget debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

Mr. Golding’s presentation will be carried live on Nationwide 90 FM and our YouTube platform, Nationwide90FM Live, starting at 2 pm.

Finance minister, Dr. Nigel Clarke, announced several give-backs when he opened the budget debate last Tuesday.

These include a minimal increase in the income tax threshold, a $20,000 reverse tax credit and an increase in the duty-free threshold. Dr. Clarke also announced an increase in the pension exemption and age relief exemption.

Mrs. Davis Whyte says Mr. Golding has a duty to provide an alternative to Dr. Clarke’s policy prescriptions.

Meanwhile, political commentator, Dr. Nadeen Spence says given what he said in the campaign for the recent local government elections, Mark Golding cannot afford to dodge the issue of raising the income tax threshold.

Dr. Spence says she also expects Mr. Golding to deliver a budget presentation that is inclusive but fiscally responsible.
