Abrahams Condemns Racially Charged Rhetoric; Suggests PNP Should Apologise for Seaga Attacks

Human rights advocate, Dr. Michael Abrahams, agrees that the People’s National Party, PNP, should consider publicly apologising for the racial abuse that was directed at former Prime Minister Edward Seaga during the period of the 1970s.

Abrahams made the call while condemning recent racially charged attacks against PNP President, Mark Golding by government MPs, Everald Warmington and Juliet Cuthbert Flynn.

Daina Davy reports.

Dr. Michael Abrahams says what was done to Edward Seaga was wrong.

The popular obstetrician says now would be a good time for the PNP to apologise for the way Mr Seaga was treated.

He says both sides of the political divide should demonstrate that race-based attacks are wrong.

But despite acknowledging that former Prime Minister Seaga was treated poorly, Abrahams says the recent attacks by Warmington and Cuthbert Flynn call into question their suitability for representational politics.

Abrahams is demanding that the leadership of the Jamaica Labour Party condemn the comments.

Meanwhile, president of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica, PSOJ, Metry Seaga, says comparisons to racial attacks made in the past are unhelpful.

He’s rejecting suggestions that the PNP president is only being subjected to what was done to former Prime Minister Seaga with little public condemnation.

Seaga says all politicians should strive for a gentler type of politics. He’s reiterating his call for the political ombudsman to address the issue.
