Wigton Energy Limited says it has got approval from the Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport to pursue the replacement of the 20.7MW Wigton I wind facility with solar.
It comes on the heels of the company’s disclosure that the Government Procurement Entity has also approved its proposal to develop a 49.83MW solar facility in Clarendon.
Together, the two facilities will will bring Wigton Energy’s total projected solar capacity to around 70MW, which would make it the largest solar energy provider in the English-speaking Caribbean. It will also become Jamaica’s largest renewable energy company in terms of the capacity it manages.
Wigton’s wind farm, which is located in Manchester, was developed in three phases and currently sports 67MW of capacity, which will be reduced with the replacement.
Wigton Energy CEO Gary Barrow was non-committal about where the replacement 21MW solar power generation will be sited.
“We are looking at our options now,” he said he told the Financial Gleaner, but declined to comment further on funding and possible partnerships to execute the solar energy project.
