LONDON (AP):
WHILE WEST Ham’s win over Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 had the underlying issues of two coaches under pressure, there was another cloud with the Hammer’s ever-present number-nine, Reggae Boy Michail Antonio, laid up in hospital recovering from an operation that followed a car wreck on Saturday.
Before the game, West Ham’s players warmed up in the player’s jersey, apparently putting aside coach’s Julen Lopetegui problems that could spell disaster for him in the role.
Wolves started the night second to last while the London side were 14th, and the pressure and nerves were apparent in an edgy first-half that was devoid of class or composure.
Mohammed Kudus and Konstantinos Mavropanos had half chances for West Ham, while at the other end João Gomes shot over from a good position.
Things improved after the break, and West Ham took the lead in the 53rd minutes from a corner kick. Wolves left Tomas Soucek unmarked at the back post and his looping header sailed into the far corner.
Matt Doherty equalised for Wolves in the 69th. However, just three minute later West Ham’s talismanic captain Jarrod Bowen found time and space in the box to slot home with his left foot.
Earlier, the home fans gave Antonio a warm round of applause in the ninth minute, while both goalscorers displayed his jersey during their celebrations.
Antonio underwent surgery on what West Ham described as a “lower limb fracture”.
Unverified images of a heavily damaged Ferrari were shared on social media. It was not known if it was the car involved in the accident.
“He remains in everyone’s thoughts as he continues his rehabilitation,” West Ham said of Antonio.
“Everyone at the club would like to reiterate their heartfelt thanks to the first responders, emergency services, air ambulance staff and the NHS (National Health Service) for the incredible support given to Michail in the wake of the accident.”
Antonio has made more than 300 appearances for West Ham since joining the club from Nottingham Forest in 2015.
The result left the Hammers still 14th spot, one point behind Manchester United. It was the third defeat in a row for Wolves, who remain on nine points, equal with third-to-last Ipswich Town.
