‘We’re ready for whomever’

GLENMUIR HIGH School are not particularly bothered about who they face in the business end of the schoolboy football season, believing in their ability to beat any of the teams considered among the best this year.

The Clarendon-based school have booked their spots in the semifinals of both the ISSA daCosta Cup as well as the ISSA Champions Cup knockout competition where they stand as defending champions.

They are also in the running to complete a treble, inclusive of the Champions Cup, this season, a feat which has only been achieved once by Jamaica College (JC) in 2014.

Assistant coach Jhanoy Chambers said his players will be ready to take on whichever opponent that may stand in their way but that their focus is firmly placed on the next opponents in their schedule.

“The expectations for the team now is always going to be looking at the next game. We’ll go to the next game, perform to the best of our abilities and see where that takes us,” he said.

Glenmuir are fresh off a dramatic 2-1 win against Kingston College (KC) in the quarterfinals of the Champions Cup on Saturday at the Catherine Hall Stadium.

The defending champions left it late to topple the famed Purples, booking their spot for a semifinal clash against Ocho Rios today.

Ocho Rios got the better of St Catherine 2-0 in their quarterfinal.

After the match, Glenmuir head coach Andrew Peart praised his team for their perseverance against a strong KC unit.

“KC were really disciplined in not allowing penetration and not allowing any forward playing of the ball,” Peart stated.

“One of the key lessons is never giving up and always fighting until it’s over and today was testament to that.”

Glenmuir will also be preparing for their daCosta Cup semifinal clash against Garvey Maceo, set for December 4.

This year will be the first daCosta Cup semifinals since 2015 that does not involve traditional powerhouses Clarendon College nor Cornwall College, who were both eliminated in the round of 16.

However, Chambers said the team is not focused on the absence of their perennial rivals as they are prepared to face any team that stands in their way.

“It’s not like we trained for any of the traditional powerhouses differently,” he explained.

“We have our training plan and we follow in our periodisation and we’re just going to execute, whoever comes, we’ll prepare for them as same and hopefully our plans will work out in our favour.”

Glenmuir’s next assignment will see them in the Champions Cup against Ocho Rios at the National Stadium today.
