The stabbing death of 42-year-old truck driver, Ronald Marchan, outside a supermarket in Point Fortin on the night of December 18, has further stirred up painful memories for a Tabaquite family still coping with the murder of another relative.

The father of one who worked with Persad’s Wholesale and Retail Ltd died at 8.48 pm at the Point Fortin Hospital.

In January 2022, his brother-in-law, Davidson Jeremy, 31, also of Mota Trace, was shot and killed while outside a supermarket in the community.

At the family’s home in Tabaquite on December 19, Jeremy’s grieving mother (Marchan’s mother-in-law) said her son’s killer remained at large.

“January coming will make three years since he died, and we still cannot get over that. Now, look at what happened to my son-in-law. We have to deal with this now,” Sarah Jeremy, 62, told Newsday.

The mother of four said Marchan was originally from Siparia and moved into the area about 18 years ago.

She described him as hardworking, adding he was looking forward to celebrating Christmas with friends and relatives.

“For Christmas, he was working from dark to dark. Now we have no Christmas. He was counting down the days. But trouble does not say when it is coming.”

Marchan’s killing stemmed from a dispute over a parking. In a somewhat similar manner, Jeremy and his killer had an exchange of words moments before tragedy struck. The gunman then ran, got into nearby a pickup van, and left.

Police said around 7 pm on December 18, Marchan and two other co-workers arrived at Tanner Street, Point Fortin, to deliver goods in a truck to Persad’s D Food King Supermarket.

The others got out of the truck, and Marchan remained in the driver’s seat.

Around 7.50 pm, the 34-year-old suspect approached and asked Marchan to move the truck.

The two argued, and the other man left. He returned around ten minutes later and resumed arguing with Marchan.

Marchan opened the driver’s door, and the man began stabbing him.

The man then walked away and supermarket workers took Marchan to the hospital, where he later died.

The unemployed suspect, also from Tanner Street, surrendered to the police minutes later and is in custody.

While Marchan was still alive, his attacker walked into the Point Fortin Police Station and told officers he had just wounded a man.

He even carried the knife he used, which was smeared with blood.

While speaking with him, the police were told Marchan had died.

They arrested the attacker and seized the weapon.

Sgt Deo and other police from the Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region Three, police were also notified.
