IN AN effort to promote good health and wellness among Unicomer (Courts) Jamaica Limited staff members, the company has launched its new flagship ‘Betta U’ wellness initiative.

Betta U is an innovative health and wellness programme designed to promote a vibrant and balanced lifestyle among Unicomer employees. The initiative is open to all 1,200 employees and contractors of Unicomer retail brands, including Courts, Courts Ready Cash, Courts Optical, Lucky Dollar, RadioShack and Ashley Home Furniture.

According to Carri Stewart, director of human capital at Unicomer (Courts) Jamaica Limited, the company has launched the Betta U health and wellness initiative to assist their staff in leading wholesome lifestyles.

“The initiative will cover three areas, WUK UP, MEDZ UP and VYBES UP, that will focus on different areas of health and wellness that will be beneficial to the staff. Each area will help the staff to lead wholesome and balanced lives that will not only be beneficial to them on an individual basis, but in the short and long term they will be an asset to their Unicomer family and their families as well,” Stewart said.

Maximilian Campbell, head of talent, organisation development and employee experience at Unicomer, said the WUK UP part of the programme focuses on the physical health of the staff. To date, Campbell said they have been encouraging staff to get physically active, and have engaged and partnered with a number of service providers, including Express Fitness, to offer an array of services to their employees.

“We want our employees to engage in physical exercise and do what it takes to on a broader scale to get in shape and monitor their health. Health is wealth, and that is a win-win situation for everyone,” Campbell said.

Meanwhile, Stewart indicated that the VYBZ UP component includes creating social programmes for employees to build camaraderie and enjoy all aspects of their lives. “We have had regional socials in the Corporate Area, central Jamaica, and the western and northern end will also have their share of activities. We have also scheduled games evening and the response from the staff has been incredible,” she said.

Through the MEDZ UP component, Campbell said the objective is to provide a supportive environment for their staff members with the partnership of internal and external stakeholders.

“The reaction from our team members has been extraordinary. With changes, there have been difference of opinions, but everyone is motivated about the different aspects of the initiative. They are excited about being apart of something that is great; and with this launch, there has been an added buzz in the organisation,” Stewart said.

The Betta U initiative was launched after a week of activities to sensitise the employees. The initiative, they said, was started last year and will be a regular staple on the company’s calendar of events.

Over 30 exhibitors from a wide cross section of services participated in the launch of the Betta U initiative, held at the Unicomer corporate offices in New Kingston.
