Tyler Mason enjoys win on tough day for J’cans at Miramar

JAMAICA’S ATHLETES found the going tough at yesterday’s Miramar Invitational Meet at the Ansin Sports Complex in Florida, with sprint hurdler Tyler Mason scoring the only win from the island in the men’s 110-metre hurdles.

Mason, an alternate in the event on the Jamaica team at last year’s World Athletics Championships in Budapest, after his fourth-place finish at the National Senior Championships, won the event in 13.57 seconds.

Eric Edwards of the United States was second in 13.60, with Andrew Pozzi, of Great Britain, third in 13.63. Orlando Bennett of Jamaica was fourth in 13.72.

In the men’s 100 metres, it took the photo finish camera to decide the outcome as the United States’ Courtney Lindsay and Jamaican Ackeem Blake clocked 10.28 seconds. The American was awarded with the win, while Andre Ewers got third with a 10.43 clocking.

Rohan Watson and Yohan Blake, with 10.52, finished seventh and eighth.

Long jumper Chanice Porter was also second, leaping out to 6.36 metres in the women’s long jump. Taliyah Brooks of the United States won the event with 6.38, while Tissanna Hickling of Jamaica was fourth with 6.27.

World Indoor 400 metres bronze medallist Rusheen McDonald had a third-place finish in the men’s 200 metres, clocking 21.09 seconds.

The United States’ Kenny Bednarek won the event in 20.35, just ahead of countryman Christian Coleman, the World Indoor 60-metre champion, 20.43.

Danniel Thomas-Dodd was another podium finisher for Jamaica, her heave of 18.72 metres leaving her third in the women’s shot put.

Chase Jackson of the United States won the event with a meet-record throw of 19.88, while her countrywoman, Maggie Ewen, was second with 18.95.

Barbados’ Sada Williams captured the women’s 200 metres in 22.82 seconds, Shafique Moloney of St Vincent won the women’s 600 metres in a national record, 1:23.80 minutes, and The Bahamas’ Alanzo Russell grabbed the men’s 400 metres in a season’s best 45.36 seconds.
