PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):
In a significant development for Trinidad and Tobago football, President of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF), Kieron Edwards, has outlined a forward-thinking strategy to strengthen the national team.
Speaking on the WESN TV programme hosted by Andre E. Baptiste on Saturday, Edwards revealed that the federation is pursuing a multifaceted approach to player development and recruitment.
Central to this plan is the decision for head coach Dwight Yorke to travel to and from T&T to have discussions with potential overseas players while the local coaches and technical team continue to manage and nurture homegrown players on the ground.
“The coach will be doing his due diligence to get up to speed with the international players. He will be back and forth in Trinidad during the period.”
“When you hire someone to make a cake, you can’t give them the recipe. He has his recipe and formula in terms of how to get the job done, and we are here to support,” Edwards stated.
Edwards highlighted that the TTFF is in discussions about attracting individuals with ancestral connections to the country.
There are also talks of a possible inclusion of high-profile names such as Manchester United’s on-loan player Jadon Sancho, who boasts both Trinidadian and Guyanese heritage.
“We are in discussions with several persons with heritage from the diaspora not just at the senior level, but also the youth level,” added Edwards.
Edwards emphasised that the federation’s current discussions are part of a broader vision to rejuvenate Trinidad and Tobago football.
The goal is to combine the skill and passion of local players with the experience and technical prowess of overseas players to create a formidable team capable of making a mark on the global stage.
The TTFF president added that they are still in discussions with the Saudi Arabia national team for a possible friendly international this month.
