The ‘Truth Hurts’ - Devin Di Dakta tackles social issues with latest track

There is no escaping the buzz around social media, and many artistes have jumped on the latest trends to create music. For Grammy-nominated Devin Di Dakta, he's stepped into the spotlight with the visuals for Truth Hurts, shining a light on some of the most talked-about news and trends making waves online.

"The song Truth Hurts is just a preview of what's to come on a project I'm working on for next year. This song was literally based on the latest trends on social media today. Same with the music video, it's about highlighting a few of the ills in our society today and the people who are allegedly behind them," he told THE STAR.

The recently released black-and-white visuals for the track open with the intro, " Sometimes all yuh need fi do is shut up and listen ... dem a say the truth hurts who feels it cries; but I don't care 'bout your feelings ... got to speak my mind ...", mentions senseless killings, the glorification of 'dunce' culture, and the challenges youths face because of poor role models.

Not too bothered by the mixed reactions, Devin Di Dakta says he's always intentional when making songs like these, as he anticipates how listeners will react.

"The thing about me, though, I think before I write. So, whenever I release a song, that's final. It's now up to the listeners to interpret it their way and feel how they feel about it. It's now out of my control."

Outside of new singles and working on a new EP or, based on the progression, an album, the Rrri Bam Bi Deng Deng deejay is preparing for a show with his Psych Ward Band this Friday at 22 Jerk, in St Andrew, called 'A Live Lyrical Experience'.

Speaking on what people can expect on the night, he said, "Attendees will get a sneak peak into the more mature vibe of Devin Di Dakta that's never been showcased live on stage. However, they'll also get some of the fun stuff they're used to. Selecting the songs have always been a challenge because I am trying to show a side of me that no one has ever seen live, but still find the balance with songs that they would've already known. "

And, with Christmas and New Year's only a few days away, the artiste is holding tight to his daddy duties, even though he's not too big on celebrations.

"I'm a father and my kids are old enough to ask for Christmas presents. So I have no choice but to be their Santa Claus," He said, laughing, and added: My new year's resolution remains the same for the past couple years: lose some weight and make more money."
