DEFENDING CHAMPIONS, Glenmuir High School, kept their hopes of repeating as Champions Cup titleholders alive after a last-minute goal gave them a 2-1 win over Kingston College (KC) at the Montego Bay Sports Complex last evening.
Glenmuir join Hydel, who earned a 3-2 victory over Garvey Maceo yesterday, Jamaica College (JC), and Ocho Rios High, who were quarter-final winners on Friday.
For the second year in a row, Hydel clipped Garvey Maceo in the opening round of the Champions Cup when the Devon Anderson-led team ran out 3-2 winners on the day.
Garvey Maceo would open the scoring early in the contest through Omarian O’Brian in the 11th minute but were pegged back when Dontae Brooks pulled Hydel level just a few minutes later.
As the rain poured in the second half, so too did the goals as Hydel edged into the lead through D’Sean Henry, who was left unmarked in the box to head home in the 57th minute.
Their lead would not last long, however, as less than two minutes later, Delano Thompson found the leveller for Garvey Maceo, finishing between the legs of the goalkeeper after breaking through on goal.
Keyanni Jackson would secure the win for Hydel in the 74th minute of the contest with a well-placed finish.
Anderson, head coach of Hydel, was filled with praise for his team, especially in light of the rainy conditions in the second half.
“It was a workmanlike performance,” he said.
“We dug deep in order to pull off this victory. It was a hard-fought game from both teams. We went out there and stuck to the task. We saw the conditions and it wasn’t conducive, but we don’t complain. Once there is a field and there is a ball, then Hydel is ready. Anytime, anywhere, anyhow.”
In the marquee match of the evening, Glenmuir defeated KC 2-1 in a tightly contested fixture under rainy conditions.
The ever-reliable Orane Watson opened the scoring for Glenmuir in the contest as the national under-20 representative struck home through a crowded penalty box just before the half-time whistle.
Demario Daley pulled the famed purples level with a well-struck shot from distance on the hour mark which skidded off the Catherine Hall pitch and caught the Glenmuir custodian flat-footed.
Nyron Allen, however, would find the winner in time added on as he arrived just in time to tap in a cross from substitute Ricardo Binns.
The results mean Hydel will next face JC in the semifinals, while Glenmuir have booked a date with destiny against Ocho Rios.
The semifinals are set to kick off on Wednesday with a doubleheader at the National Stadium.
