The 41st staging of the Sting stage show will see a combination of veteran and new school acts.
The lineup—revealed at press launch of the event held at the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport on Tuesday— will feature Tommy Lee Sparta, Turbulence, Teflon (referred to as the three Ts by promoters) Gyptian, Jamal, Quada, Jahmiel, Bushman, Dwayne Stephenson, Shane O, Macka Diamond, Laden, Skippa, Kant10t, Ace Gawd and other emerging artists.
“My dad started the show as a sound clash. We’re here to look at the fact that this platform has made it for a lot of Dancehall— as much as even the vendors and people who send their kids to school, and we want to continue doing this,” Tahheer Lain, CEO of Supreme Promotions said at the launch.
He added: “look to keep the young artists in the industry having a gateway to keep out there; different from social media because Sting was everybody’s first YouTube.”
The highly anticipated event, which is now being referred to as Sting Live, will take place on Boxing Day at JamWorl in St. Catherine. The promoters will also be hosting a follow-up event called Hawwt Chocolate on December 28 at Sugarman’s Beach, which is also in the parish.
Laing, who is the son of the Sting’s founder, noted that the mini rebranding is to accommodate modern artists.
“We’re trying to slide away from all the things that may hamper us in the future. So, I’m trying to give the show a softer feel. As much as it’s a rough cut show, I’m trying to soften it because we realise that a lot of our younger artists they may not have the capability, or patter of thinking as the older artists… one time it was just Sting, now it’s Sting Live,” he reasoned.
Sting has seen some of Dancehall’s biggest moments in clashes. In the last two years, it has faced criticisms, however promoters reiterated that the brand is here to stay.
