ST ANDREW Technical High School (STATHS) and Wolmer’s Boys’ booked their spots in the semi-finals of the ISSA Walker Cup knockout competition with identical 2-1 wins over Campion College and Tivoli Gardens High, respectively, yesterday in a doubleheader at Stadium East.
In the first match of the afternoon, the boys from Bumper Hall left it late to secure their passage to the final four with a 2-1 comeback win over the Campionites.
The more dominant team throughout the contest, STATHS found themselves behind in the first half when Tyler Falconer opened the scoring for Campion in the 40th minute of the contest.
STATHS would press for the equaliser and found purchase in the 80th minute when Dwayne Atkinson fired home after a scramble inside the box from a corner.
With minutes left on the clock, STATHS sealed the win through a solo effort from Ajetai Marshall.
Phillip Williams, head coach of STATHS, praised his players for their determination.
“We started the game a little bit lacklustre because we haven’t been getting any serious practice in,” Williams said after the match.
“But the boys showed character against a good Campion team to come from behind and to play some lovely football.”
In the second game, Wolmer’s and Tivoli faced off against each other for the third time this season.
The two teams had met twice in the first round, with Wolmer’s winning the first match 4-2 at home before going to Tivoli to lose by the same margin.
With progression on the line this time around, it was the Wolmerians who took the win, with Addon Daye leading the way with a first-half brace.
Daye opened the scoring with a stunning strike from outside the box in the 25th minute, doubling the lead before the half-time whistle with a well-placed header.
Tivoli would come out with greater attacking intent in the second half but it was too little, too late, as Ryan-O’Neil Francis’ goal on the hour mark proved a consolation effort.
The results mean STATHS and Wolmer’s will join Mona and Excelsior in the final four of the competition.
STATHS will face Mona for a spot in the final while Wolmer’s will take on Excelsior in the competition’s other fixture.
The semi-finals are set to kick off next week Thursday, November 28, with a doubleheader at Stadium East.
