Spencer ‘over the moon’ with new Spurs deal

REGGAE GIRLZ goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer has signed a new deal with Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL) outfit Tottenham Hotspur FC, which will see her tied to the North London club until June 2026.

The announcement was made yesterday with Spencer expressing her delight with extending her stay.

“I’m over the moon,” she said after penning her new deal.

“I have been here for a long time now. So, for me, it was important that I got this done. Obviously, having conversations with Robert [Vilahamn], it’s really pleasing that they want to keep me here. So I’m really, really happy.”

Spencer first joined Tottenham after leaving West Ham United in 2019, and has been a mainstay for the club since.

She made her debut in Tottenham’s first game in the WSL, a 1-0 loss to Chelsea, and was a key member of the squad which finished runners-up in last season’s Women’s FA Cup.

Spencer reflected on her time with the club and is looking forward to continuing her career in North London.

“When I first joined, the club had just got into the WSL, a lot of different players, a lot of different staff. So the journey we have been on has been incredible and it was something I didn’t want to let go of,” she said.

“I’m happy to continue the journey with the club, we have come a long way and we still have a long way to go.”

She added, “For me, the experience has been great, I have loved every single minute of playing in the WSL and I’m just happy that I can continue that.”

Spencer also made her international debut while representing Tottenham, receiving her first Reggae Girlz call-up in 2021, before making her debut in a 1-0 win over Nigeria.

Since then, she had gone on to feature for Jamaica during the 2023 Women’s World Cup and made history as the first Jamaican goalkeeper to keep three clean sheets in the group stage.

Now a veteran, the 33-year-old goalkeeper is still determined to break new ground in her career, even as she sets an example for younger players.

“Throughout my career, I have always wanted to be at a club where, once I do finish my playing career, I can leave it in a better state than it was,” she said.

“So, for me, not only on the pitch but also off the pitch, I hope to help the youngsters and everyone else coming through, so, when my time is done, I can leave feeling happy.”

Spencer has made six appearances for Spurs this season as the club sits seventh in the WSL table.

Her next outing will be against Manchester City where she will face off against international teammate Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw.
