Soursop leaf tea is a Caribbean herbal tea pack with nutritional benefits. Consume hot or cold with some honey to soothe your spirit healthily.

The soursop leaf tea is considered a herbal tea. But for some who grew up with a soursop tree in the backyard and drinking soursop tea for the sake of drinking tea, it’s just tea.

To make the tea, you need the leave from the evergreen tree of the soursop plant. While some make the tea with green leaves, the dry leaves are used in Jamaica. Dry leaves make more potent tea, and you need fewer leaves than if you were to use green ones.

Drying the soursop leaves is very simple. Wash the green leaves and spread them out to dry in a cold area away from the sun, preferably in a mash basket so they can air dry. It will take the leaves about a week to dry for tea.

The tea doesn’t have any hint of the soursop fruit flavour. However, soursop leave tea does have a pleasing woody taste. Similar to black tea but with a more pleasant taste.

What you need for this recipe

  • Dry soursop leaf: In Jamaica, we only use the dry soursop leaf to make tea. The dry leaves make more potent tea. Place the green leaves in a cool, dry place away from the sun to dry the soursop leaves. It’s best not to sun dry the leaves to keep more of their nutrients. The leaves will take a week to dry for tea.
  • Water: Room temperature will do.
  • Sweetener: I choose honey as a sweetener since it is healthier than sugar.

How do you make soursop leaf tea?

  1. The leaves: Wash the dry leaves and place them in a small teapot with room-temperature water. Three leaves are enough for this recipe, but use more for a stronger tea. Cover the pot, then pot to boil on medium heat.
  2. Boiling time: Bring the water in the pot to a boil. Once the water starts to boil, let it brew for about 3 to 5 minutes. Brew longer for a stronger tea. Turn the heat off and leave to steep for 10 minutes.
  3. Sweeten: Strain and sweeten with sugar or honey. I prefer to use honey.

What is soursop leaf tea good for?

Soursop leaf tea has many health benefits, with the numbers rising as the tea gets more commercial popularity.

In Jamaica, we traditionally drink soursop leaves for the taste, to boost the immune system and as a nutritional supplement. Soursop leaves tea has high levels of antioxidants such as Vitamin C, Flavonoids, Phytosterols and Tannins, which help improve immunity and fight against diseases.

Other health benefits that soursop tea is said to have are that it helps with weight loss, increases digestion health, reduces inflammation in the body and helps to regulate blood pressure.

Can you refrigerate the tea?

Yes, you refrigerate the soursop leaf tea. But consume within three days of making for the best taste. You can drink soursop leaf tea hot or cold. And if you wish, you can also add milk.

  • 4 Leaves
  • 320 ml (1.35 cups) Water
  • ½ tbsp Honey
  • Wash and place the soursop leaves in the teapot with the water.

  • Put the boil on medium heat.

  • Once the water starts boiling, let it brew for about 3-5 minutes.

  • Turn the heat off and leave to steep for 10 minutes.

  • Strain and sweeten to your liken.

  • Want a stronger tea? Use another leaf or two. Brew for more that 5 minutes. Longer brewing time will require more water.
  • Because soursop leaf tea already have a pleasing taste you may not need to use a lot of honey.
