The winners of this year’s Mister and Miss Tourism Jamaica competition, which is set for Sunday, June 30, at the Half Moon conference centre in Montego Bay, will receive scholarships valued at $300,000.

This year, Half Moon Resort is the title sponsor, and the event has been rebranded as Half Moon Jamaica Mister and Miss Tourism Jamaica.

The announcement was made recently by Yakinie Mitchell, co-founder and executive chairman of the organising committee, during the official media launch at the S Club, S Hotel in Montego Bay, St James.

“What we have added this year is to provide subsidies or scholarships to the winners, both male and female, so they can further their education. Whether tertiary or some persons who wouldn’t have completed a certain level of education before tertiary. We are there for them because we are creating resilient people. If we are doing that, we have to ensure they are educated and have what it takes to be an ambassador,” Mitchell told The Gleaner.

“We want them to see that we are about Brand Jamaica and represent something that is positive. We need an ambassador who will represent what we are promoting, which is sustainable resilience tourism. It’s not just about travelling but exploring other cultures and bringing our culture overseas so people can come to our shores,” he added.

Deputy Mayor of Montego Bay, Dwight Crawford, expressed his pride in this initiative.

“It’s all about MoBay for me. When I see things like this that put our little city of Montego Bay on the stage, it is a proud moment. It’s a home-grown product and I want to tell the team, continue doing ambitious ventures like this. How you measure the future of a country is in its young people,” Crawford said.

After preliminary judging, six contestants, three males and three females from the counties of Cornwall, Middlesex and Surrey, were selected to participate at the event.

The inaugural staging was held in June 2019; however, March 2023 was the first time since the pandemic that the event was held. Jordon Lincoln Haye took the title Mister Tourism Jamaica, with Tyrese Henry and Sahir Goshine placing second and third. Andreka Nelson was named Miss Tourism Jamaica 2023. Yukari Gordon placed second and Lathorna Ricketts was third.

Major sponsors include The Pinnacle Montego Bay, Doyley’s Funeral Services & Cabinet Making, Daubon’s Construction and Cornwall Garden Centre.
