Romance, wedding bells and baby inspire Shuga’s ‘Love Doctor’

Singer, Shuga, shares a rather romantic back story involving her and her now husband in relation to her soon-to-be-released single, Love Doctor. Produced by Donovan Germain on the Boxing Around riddim, this lovers rock track will be released on November 7 via VP Records.

Love Doctor came out of my relationship with my husband,” Shuga shared. “Before marriage, we were often miles apart … he was in the United States, and I was in Jamaica, working on my album. When the distance really started to get to me, he’d say, ‘You need your medication.’ Those words and that feeling led to the song.”

She continued, “That time apart, combined with inspiration from Romain Virgo’s Love Doctor, helped me bring this song to life. I sent him the demo one day, and by the next, he was on a plane to see me. From there, it was wedding bells and a baby boy.”

The single, which serves as the first release from her upcoming début album, Girl from Montego Bay - which is scheduled for release in early 2025 - showcases a rich musical backdrop featuring Jason Welch on bass, Kirk ‘Kirkledove’ Bennett on drums, Mitchum Chin on guitar, and horns by Garth Forrester and Dean Fraser.

The accompanying music video, directed by Kenny Gray, features a medley that includes Shuga’s cover of Cornell Campbell’s Boxing Around, highlighting contrasting views of desire through both songs. The video will be released on November 8.
