MOUNT PLEASANT Academy FC handed a 3-0 defeat to Montego Bay United FC at Drax Hall Sports Complex in St Ann yesterday, toppling the latter from their precarious position as league leaders of the Jamaica Premier League.
In wet, muddy conditions, Mount Pleasant’s leading goalscorer, Daniel Green, opened the scoring in the 16th minute. In the 48th, Mount Pleasant’s Kimoni Bailey struck from the penalty spot, while Raheem Edwards’s 70th-minute addition left MBU with no answers.
According to Mount Pleasant head coach, Theodore ‘Tappa’ Whitmore, the team executed well.
“Despite the weather conditions, I think we stood up, and we won our one-on-one battles. We didn’t give our opponents any look-in at goal today. We kept a clean sheet and happened to score three goals,” Whitmore told The Gleaner.
“We executed well and kept one of the league leaders from scoring today. We kept them at bay, and I think that augers well for Mount Pleasant,” he added.
Rodolfo Zapata, head coach of MBU, said the team didnt play well.
“It’s simple, Mount Pleasant deserved to win. I think that the penalty kick at the beginning of the second half changed the story of the game. I need to analyse the video to see what happened and keep on working. The pitch was bad for both teams, but there are no excuses.
“It is hard to make short passes and play beautiful football in this type of weather, but Mount Pleasant played better than us.”
