Molynes finally earn a second win

MOLYNES UNITED scored only their second win this Jamaica Premier League (JPL) season, beating fellow strugglers Dunbeholden in the first match of a doubleheader at Drewsland yesterday.

The games, which were originally scheduled for the Anthony Spaulding Complex, were moved to Drewsland during the day yesterday because of a curfew in the Arnett Gardens community.

Carlos Cooper opened the scoring for Molynes after 21 minutes and Jowell Powell added the second nine minutes later to give the Jermaine Thomas-coached team their first points in four games and their first win in seven.

Although Molynes remain at the foot of the JPL standing with seven points, the same as Tivoli, Thomas admitted it is a great boost to their problematic campaign thus far.

“This is a big one. We were going through it mentally,” Thomas told The Gleaner.

“We had it difficult on the training pitch. We had to be pulling out all the stops, and the hierarchy of the club jumped in and really assisted.

“But they played well tonight. We have been doing a lot of work in training in the last two and a half weeks. And what you saw on the pitch tonight is a testament to the work we have been putting in for the past two and a half weeks,” he commented.

Both teams started positively but it was Molynes who seized the initiative when the Dunbeholden defence lost possession outside the area and Cooper latched on to the loose ball to fire Molynes in front.

The team had barely settled down when another defensive lapse led to Dunbeholden losing possession again outside the box, and Powell was on hand to nod home from a cross to put his team 2-0 up.

Dunbeholden sit five places above their opponents in the table but are only two points clear on nine.

However, more than anything, coach Byjeon Thomas was disappointed in the way they conceded the two goals.

“Not the result we wanted. But we had a 10-minute spell where we lapsed in concentration and we conceded two goals and never recovered from that,” he said.

“It is early in the season, so it’s not a setback. But I am just disappointed in the way we conceded. But we will continue to work.”
