Mayne leads Howard University to collegiate golf title

Howard University’s women’s golf team, led by Jamaica’s Emily Mayne, delivered a masterclass performance to claim victory at the 2024 National Collegiate Championship recently.

The Bison’s’ total dominance saw them coming away with the win by a staggering 40 strokes in the 54-hole tournament held at The Golf Club at Cinco Ranch in Katy, Texas.

Jamaican freshman sensation Mayne stole the spotlight in her debut collegiate golf event, as she displayed sheer brilliance and led from wire to wire following her 11 over par 224 over three rounds, including an impressive one over par 72 in the first round, which secured her a historic victory.

Chicago State’s Koranis Boonmadee fell one stroke behind Mayne for second place.

The Bison collectively finished at 49 over par 901 and notably, all five members of the Bison squad claimed spots in the Top 10, further underlining their dominance.

Second-year standout Morgan Horrell seized third place overall with a commendable 14 over par 227 performance, while Marley Franklin, reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) Rookie of the Year, secured fourth place on the player leader board with a score of 15 over par 228.

Junior Jada Richardson shared the fifth spot overall, posting a score of 17 over par 230 while Kendall Jackson rounded off the Bison’s remarkable showing, finishing ninth with a score of 20 over par 233.

Delaware State claimed the runner-up position with a score of 89 over par 941.

With this resounding victory, the Howard University team now sets its sights on the upcoming NEC Championships, slated to take place at Callaway Resorts & Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia, from April 19 to 21.
