NEWLY appointed head coach of Chapelton Maroons, Jermaine Douglas, believes the 3-1 victory over reigning Jamaica Premier League champions Cavalier, on Sunday, should boost the morale of the team and kick-start a winning trail for the Clarendon-based team.
“We still have to continue and work. We should have a good week in training, so I hope we can continue with this momentum. I haven’t been in charge long. I only took over last Friday, so in training, we’ve been doing some activities to get the players to bond,” he stated.
Chapelton Maroons, who moved to 11th in the current standings, were registering their third win of the season. They ended a seven-game run without a victory. According to Douglas the three points came at an appropriate time.
“It’s a good foundation for us to move forward. We want to move as far away from the relegation zone as possible. We’re hoping that we could continue to pick up points, get ourselves in the mid-table, and then, hopefully, we could challenge for a playoff position,” he stated.
Douglas, who was in charge for his second game with the team, revealed that based on his observations, even before taking over the reins from Oneil Thompson, the team was struggling physically and that this will be top priority for him during his tenure.
“When I analysed the games before I took over, the team was doing well up until the 70th, 80th minutes. Then they would fall off. Some of it is psychological, and some were tactical discipline. I felt the main thing was the physical as this affects all the other parts. So we’ve been working on that to implement new ideas, and they are responding well,” he said.
Douglas added that he is taking a close look at the squad ahead of January’s transfer window.
“You always want to improve and get a stronger squad, but I’m still assessing the players. I’m still learning about the players, their strengths and weaknesses. After another two weeks or so, I’ll see the areas which need strengthening,” he said.
