In an unforgettable moment of recognition, international dancehall sensation Sean Paul was awarded the Doctor of Letters Honoris Causa by the University of Technology (UTech, Jamaica) last Friday, marking another major milestone in his illustrious career.
The award celebrated his extraordinary achievements in music and his invaluable contributions to nation-building, further cementing his legacy as one of the genre's most influential figures.
"His album successes and live performances have brought him fame, making him the first Jamaican artiste to perform in Kazakhstan and Madagascar, as well as in over 100 other countries," UTech Jamaica said.
Before his rise to global stardom, the artiste, whose real name is Sean Paul Francis Henriques, was a student at UTech, Jamaica when it was named the College of Arts, Science and Technology. While attending there, he pursued studies in hospitality and tourism management. However, he made the bold decision to leave his studies behind and follow his passion for music, an unconventional choice that later led him to become one of Jamaica's most awarded musicians, with accolades ranging from a Grammy to a BET Award and a Soul Train Award.
Returning to his alma mater to receive the honour, Sean Paul was filled with excitement and pride.
"It's a different kind of proud, especially since I got to speak and try to impart some of my journey and knowledge to the class of 2024," he said in an interview with THE STAR.
"The campus has grown so much since I last was here, and it's an awesome feeling to see the development happening and to know that UTech is still producing people who are going to make a positive change," he added.
During his speech, he reflected on how his dreams evolved over time, offering words of wisdom to the graduates. He encouraged them to embrace change and remain bold in the pursuit of their aspirations.
"My message to you, the class of 2024, today is: Don't be afraid to dream big, learn to adapt, and remember changes are inevitable," he urged. Although Sean Paul did not complete his degree, he credited his time at the university for instilling in him the discipline and work ethic that would later fuel his success in the music industry.
"Back then I was a blank canvas; I didn't know what the painting would turn out to look like or what the future would bring for me, but [I was] committed in giving my best efforts in whatever it was, regardless of the outcome," Sean Paul said.
Recalling his own experiences in the entertainment world, Sean Paul urged the graduates to stay determined in the face of challenges. He pointed out that every career, including music, is filled with setbacks and struggles.
"Someone in the music business once told me 'You are ideally suited to this business, which is fraught with ego, shattered disappointments, and broken promises,' but I did not give up, and neither should you," he encouraged.
The artiste, who has faced his share of challenges, reflected on his journey during his interview with THE STAR, and reminded others to stay committed despite the obstacles they may encounter.
"Just keep going and know there's a brighter future ahead," he said.
