ISSA urban senior netball champs face tough test

DEFENDING ISSA senior urban schoolgirls netball champions St Catherine High will face a tough test today when they oppose Gaynstead High in a semi-final match at the Leila Robinson Courts at 3:10 p.m.

Coached by Dalton Hinds, Gaynstead have been the most impressive team in the urban competition this year with five wins in a row. St Catherine who lost to The Queen’s School in their group, only booked their semifinal spot two days ago after a 33-22 win over Jose Marti High. They finished second in the group, but will have to be at their best today to deny a very confident Gaynstead team.

In the other semi-final at 3 p.m. it should be a cakewalk for the Marvette Anderson-coached Queen’s over opponents Camperdown High. With several members from last year’s all-island junior championship team now promoted to the senior team, Queen’s dominated rivals in their group to finish on top with four straight wins.

Camperdown have shown marked improvement this year after losing all their second-round matches in 2023, but Queen’s should prove too strong. Camperdown’s only defeat in group play came against Gaynstead who scored a big 39-21 win.

Last year’s beaten junior finalists Wolmer’s High School for Girls are favoured to get the better of St Catherine High in their semifinal. The Tracy Ann Griffiths-coached team from Marescaux Road has looked a cut above their peers and should win easily. The second junior semifinal, St Hugh’s High versus Gaynstead should be close with the former having a slight edge.
