TOP Corporate Area boys’ track and field heavyweights – Calabar High School, Jamaica College (JC) and Kingston College (KC) – have been locked in a fierce battle this season and they will continue their exciting rivalry today. The three are among a record 103 teams entered for the ninth staging of the S. W. Isaac-Henry Invitational meet. The event begins at 8:40 a.m. inside the National Stadium where more than 1,950 athletes are set to compete.
This season has seen one of the most thrilling pre-championship battles in years, making it difficult to separate the top three boys’ high school teams ahead of next month’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Championships (Champs).
One of the most anticipated events will be the Class One Boys’ 400 metres where Jamaica College’s duo of Deandre Gayle and Princewell Martin will headline the field. They will face stiff competition from St Jago High’s Rasheed Buckle and Brandon Harris, along with Calabar’s Dontae Mendez.
In the Class Two event, Calabar’s Ched Brown, JC’s Kyle Thompson, and St Jago’s Nicardo Johnson are the top contenders.
Another must-watch race will be the Boys’ Class One 200m where Calabar’s Junior Gallimore and his teammate Mendez will take on JC’s Mark Anthony Miller in what should be an intense battle.
One of KC’s strongest areas this year is the sprint hurdles, and they will be at full strength today. Timothy Purrier and Daniel Clarke will lead their class one charge, while Jonathan Clarke spearheads the Class Two entrants. In Class Three, Jhaiden and Daquan Dawkins will be the ones to watch.
WATCH ST JAGO’S GIRLS
St Jago’s girls’ team will be out in large numbers as they look to maintain their mid-season momentum ahead of Champs.
Quana Walker is set to contest the Class One 400m and 400m hurdles for St Jago, while Bryana Davidson is expected to shine in the Class One 200m. She will face tough competition from Shevi-Ann Shimm of Immaculate Conception High School and Chevauna Grant of Titchfield High School.
Today’s track events include the 200m, 400m, 400m hurdles, 2000m steeplechase, 70m hurdles, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, and 4x400m relays for both high schools and clubs.
Field events will feature the pole vault, javelin throw, shot put, discus, long jump, and high jump.
DISTANCE CARNIVAL
Meanwhile, also in the Corporate Area, the Fervet Distance Carnival will take place at Jamaica College’s Ashenheim Stadium, starting at 4 p.m.
The meet opens with the Class Two Girls’ 800m and concludes with the 4x800m Open for boys.
One of the meet’s highlights will be the 5000m open for boys, where St Jago’s outstanding Ryan Achau is expected to continue his impressive season in middle and long-distance events.
