Holmwood usurp three-figure mark in Irwin demolition

HOLMWOOD TECHNICAL High School’s senior netballers went on a rampage during opening second-round action in the ISSA Rural Schoolgirl Netball competition at St Elizabeth Technical High School, destroying Irwin High 109-3 yesterday.

The Karline Graham-coached team, who are the defending rural and all-island champions sent a clear message to their other rivals that they will be difficult to dethrone.

Led by national under-21 goal shooter Jada Ricketts, and national under-16 goal attack Reneica Jones, it was simply one-way traffic.

From the outset, Holmwood made their intentions clear, rushing into a 23-1 first-quarter lead.

At the half-time break, it was 52-2, before the defending champions moved to 83-3 after the third quarter. Irwin failed to score in the final quarter with Holmwood finding the target 26 times for their massive win.

While Graham expected a win, she was surprised by the margin.

“Irwin is a new team in the sport and we expected a win but with our captain and goal defence Shaqwan Hamilton out due to injury, I thought Irwin would have scored more goals,” said Graham.

Manchester High, with several members from last year’s winning under-16 squad picked up the next biggest win among seniors on the day.

Playing at Church Teachers’ College, they overpowered Alphansus Davis 67-3.

Last year’s beaten finalists, Glenmuir, had a 29-9 win over Titchfield at The Queen’s School in a rain-affected match that did not go the full distance.
