Heather Virgo putting Hit Melody Records on the map

Jamaica-born, US-based music producer Heather Virgo says she is not afraid to stand firm and dominate in what is considered a man's space.

Virgo, who is the CEO of Hit Melody Records, said her journey into the business has been far from smooth, but she is not about to be swept under the carpet.

"There is still a lack of respect for women in the business. When I started the 'Hit Melody Records' Riddim, I encountered a lot of problems with artistes because they thought they were entitled to more. I paid for everything on my own, as there was no way to short-change system. By my second rhythm, I had already learned, so I will not allow anyone to tell me what they want, when they have no input aside from songwriting credits," she said.

Among the producer's latest projects is the 'Ionie' rhythm, which features various artistes such as Luciano, Archie Wonder, Kerry Lopez, and Silkkey D. Virgo said it is hard to choose a favourite track, as all the songs are uplifting and spread a positive message for listeners of all ages. She said that she is hoping that the project will be captivating enough to earn her major musical recognition.

"My aim is to get a Grammy or Billboard award. I am very good at what I do and I am from a musical background. But aside from that, I want to be that female that dominates in what is considered a man's space and let others know that they can do it. We have seen it happen before with VP Records, and so on, so let's carry on this tradition and be an inspiration to others. Our gender should not define our strength or capabilities," Virgo said.

Virgo spent her early years in Ulster Spring, Trelawny, before migrating to South Florida. She made her debut in the production field in 2021 with the 'New Edition' rhythm. Prior to that, she worked as an artiste manager.
