Gussie Clarke appointed honorary lecturer at UWI

Veteran producer and businessman, Augustus ‘Gussie’ Clarke, is one of three persons appointed honorary lecturers for the next two years at the Institute of Caribbean Studies (ICS) at The University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona campus.

Clarke, who will serve as entrepreneur in residence, is joined by Clyde McKenzie, professional in residence, and Seretse Small, artiste in residence.

A release from the ICS stated that the trio will bring their “extensive experience and expertise to enrich the educational experience for students”.

“Clarke’s proven track record of success will be invaluable to students pursuing the Entertainment and Cultural Enterprise Management BA degree programme. He will provide invaluable insights, mentorship, and guidance, fostering a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurial thinking within the next generation of Caribbean leaders,” the release added.

McKenzie, who was hailed as a “respected professional with a wealth of experience in the cultural and entertainment industries”, will use his practical knowledge and understanding of the current business landscape “to equip students with the tools and strategies they need to navigate the dynamic world of entertainment and cultural enterprises”.

Through his vision and entrepreneurial spirit Small, a celebrated artiste, “will be a source of inspiration for students, demonstrating how artistic talent can be successfully translated into a thriving career”.

“He will bridge the gap between artistic expression and business principles, fostering a holistic understanding of the creative industries,” the release noted.

Dr Dennis Howard, lecturer and coordinator of the Entertainment and Cultural Enterprise Management programme, expressed his delight at the appointments.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have these distinguished individuals join our programme. Their expertise and diverse perspectives will be instrumental in shaping the next generation of Caribbean cultural and entertainment leaders,” Howard said.

The residency programme is designed to provide students with invaluable real-world experience and mentorship from accomplished professionals. Through workshops, guest lectures, and individual consultations, the residents will contribute significantly to ICS students’ intellectual and professional development.
