GAYNSTEAD AND Wolmer’s Girls’ picked up big wins in yesterday’s third set of matches in the second round of the ISSA Urban Schoolgirl Netball competition at the Leila Robinson Courts.

Gaynstead got the better of Camperdown 39-21 in senior action while Wolmer’s overpowered Gaynstead 32-18 in junior action.

The Wayne Stewart-coached Camperdown found the going tough against a well-oiled Dalton Hinds-conditioned Gaynstead.

Gaynstead’s 10-6 first-quarter lead suggested that the game would have been close, however, last year’s beaten finalists showed their superiority as the game wore on.

In the second stanza, Gaynstead had pushed on to a 20-12 lead, maintaining their momentum to end the third quarter 30-16 before adding nine more goals in the final quarter to take control of Group A with six points from three wins.

Hinds thought his team played well.

“Gaynstead played particularly well today. The goal was to work on all areas of our game, and we pretty much did that. Some good attacking and defending plays,” he said.

With the semi-finals on the horizon, Hinds wanted all his players to be involved at this stage.

“The aim was to get all 11 players on the court, and we did that effectively today. We have learnt a lot from today’s game, and we will take this forward into the other upcoming games,” he added.

In other senior matches, defending champions St Catherine High and The Queen’s School remained unbeaten, picking up their third wins in a row to be joint leaders in Group B with six points each.

WINS

St Catherine got the better of Wolmer’s Girls, 47-10, and Queen’s turned back Norman Manley 38-20.

Also picking up wins among the seniors were Vauxhall, who got by Campion 27-23, José Martí, who defeated Alpha 43-7, and Jonathan Grant, who cooled Immaculate Conception 31-20.

In another brilliant display, the Tracy-Ann Griffiths-coached Wolmer’s Girls’ junior team racked up their third win in a row after getting by the previously unbeaten Gaynstead 32-18 to stay on top of Group A with six points and looked assured of a semi-final berth even with two games still to be played.

With goal shooter Kaelyn-Kendra Smith leading the way in attack and goalkeeper Ashley Kentish doing the same in defence, Wolmer’s enjoyed one-way traffic, leading 9-2, 17-9, and 24-15 before closing out the easy victory.

Griffiths was not completely satisfied.

“I am happy with the win, but I didn’t like how they played as they did not do what they should have. There were too many turnovers. We will have to correct this ahead of the semi-finals,” said Griffiths.

St Hugh’s remained perfect in Group B but were pushed by Jonathan Grant, eventually squeezing out a 23-22 win.

Norman Manley stayed on course for a semi-final spot after a 26-19 win over Immaculate in Group A to stay second on four points.

Other junior winners were Vauxhall, who easily got by Campion 27-15, St Catherine, who got the better of Papine 30-17, and José Martí, who edged Alpha 18-13.
