G.C. FOSTER College A team are champions in Intercollegiate senior netball with the Sashagay Henry-coached team, in a brilliant display, dominating first-time finalist Moneague College to beat them 48-28 in the final on Friday night at the Leila Robinson Courts.
After upsetting Mico ‘A’ in the semifinals to make their first senior final, the Nicole Aiken-Pinnock team was hoping for another big performance in their bid to become champions for the first time, but ran into an imperious G.C. Foster team.
Led by good plays from goal shooter, Odeacha Johnson, goal attack Shadine Bartley, centre, Crystal Plummer, and goal defence, Zaudi Green, a pumped Up G.C. Foster team took to the court.
Goal shooter Shanai Martin, goal attack Ashley-Jay Levy and skipper, and goalkeeper Ajahana Coleman, who were brilliant in the semifinal against Mico ‘A’, failed to handle a well-organised G.C. Foster team.
After a 6-1 lead early in the first quarter, the Moneague supporters were in high spirits but at the first break, G.C. Foster had reduced the gap to 10-8.
As if the slow start was a feint, G.C. Foster became unplayable, scoring 15 goals for which there was only a response on three occasions.
Leading 23-13 to start the second half, G.C. Foster rushed to a 30-18 third-quarter score before a big 20-goal win in the end with the final score of 48-28.
Henry, who is also the coach of the national senior team, was impressed with her team’s big win.
“I am very happy with the win. Both teams played well. It has been quite a while since we won a title. We started out very slowly as we were down by five goals early, but the girls settled down quickly and showed a lot of discipline as they were good in both attacking and defensively,” said Henry.
She gave a lot of credit to her opponents.
“I must commend the Moneague team. They have shown the improvement in netball at this level and it is very good for the national senior programme going forward,” she said.
“I would like to thank the principal, athletic director, and management staff of the G.C. Foster team, and last, but not least, the girls, who played their hearts out this season,” she concluded.
Aiken-Pinnock knew it was going to be a difficult task against a strong G.C. Foster team.
“We knew the game was going to be a tough one and it was indeed. We started well, we were sticking to our processes and executing well but as the game progressed, G.C. Foster adjusted to us as we started to make several errors. The score does not reflect the quality of play and I am very proud of my girls,” said Aiken-Pinnock.
In junior final, College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) stopped Portmore Community College 24-19, while Mico B overcame G.C. Foster B 25-20 in the intermediate final.
