Findings of FINSAC Commission to be Made Public

Finance minister, Dr .Nigel Clarke, says the government intends to make public the findings of the FINSAC Commission.

He made the announcement during his opening presentation of the 2024-2025 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives Tuesday afternoon.

He says on publication of the archives, the finance ministry will issue a special call for scholarly research into the documents to produce books, articles and other work on the financial crisis.

Dr. Clarke says his ministry and the culture ministry will also collaborate on issuing a special call for documentaries to be produced.

The FINSAC Commission of Enquiry began in 2009. The commission was tasked with examining the circumstances that led to the collapse of the country’s financial institutions in the 1990s.

Dr. Clarke says between 2009 and 2012, the expenditure on the commission was $107 million. He says there were no allocations in 2012/2013.

In 2013/2014, $4 million was allocated. Between 2014 and 2016, another $3 million was used for rent.

Dr. Clarke says after the government’s final allocations in 2016, it had lost confidence in the commission’s ability to produce a report.
