Eighty-five-year-old angler sill at it and winning

PORT ANTONIO, Portland:

THERE WAS a story behind the angler Calvin Lyn, aboard the fishing boat ‘Big Wahoo’, winning the FirstRock Investment-sponsored Sir Henry Morgan Spring-break Blue Marlin Tournament at the Old Marina last Saturday.

Lyn is 85 years old.

He is a serial participant in fishing tournaments around the island and insists he will continue to fish because it is in his blood.

“I just love fishing and I came here to Port Antonio to catch fish and I did just that. I am not too concerned about winning anything, but the love that I have for the sport is what keeps me going and I will be around for next year, the year after, and beyond,” said Lyn.

The fishing boat ‘Big Wahoo’ accounted for a total of 366.8 lb of fish, including a 132 lb marlin, while the crew of the fishing boat ‘Integrity’, which won second prize, caught 333.6 lb of fish in total.

A total of 1,143.4 lb of fish was caught over the two days of fishing by the five participating boats, which represented an average of about 228 lb per boat and according to Max Rochester, chief executive Officer (CEO) of the Sir Henry Morgan Marlin Tournament, it was an outstanding tournament and it was a good two days of fishing.

“We always wanted it to be more, but it was a good catch and everybody is pleased,” said Rochester.

“We are very conscious about preservation and so we always encourage our anglers to release marlins. Two hundred points are awarded for the release of each marlin. And I must say again that I am very pleased about the tournament and I commend FirstRock, who are the title sponsors, for the spring tournament and also our main tournament slated for October, for their commitment to the tournaments,” added Rochester.

Sable Joy of FirstRock Investments, who spoke about the company’s unwavering commitment to the tournaments, lauded the anglers for what she described “as a wonderful tournament”.
