Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett says around 40-percent of earnings from the tourism sector are retained in Jamaica.

The minister spoke at Wednesday’s post-Cabinet press briefing, one day after his contribution to the Sectoral Debate.

Mahiri Stewart has that report.

The tourism minister announced in the House of Representatives on Tuesday that the sector earned US $4.3 billion in the 2023/2024 fiscal year.

Speaking on Wednesday at a post-Cabinet press briefing, Minister Bartlett says about 40 per cent pf that sum stayed in Jamaica.

The minister says tourism revenues are used to cover the cost of imports and and operational costs.

Minister Bartlett says more investment locally can help limit the amount of money the sector spends on importing necessities.
