Angelina Jolie admits she often spends much of her time "alone" when she's not focused on raising her six children -- Maddox, 23, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18, and 16-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.
Despite her busy family life, the 49-year-old actress finds solitude in her personal life, which deeply resonated with her portrayal of opera legend Maria Callas in the upcoming film Maria.
In an interview with The Sun, Angelina shared, "I have my children, whom I love, but, as an adult, I'm often alone. I find myself identifying with the solitude and loneliness [Maria] has." She continued, "I also haven't quite figured out how to live life in a way where I'm on my own. Maybe a lot of artistes feel that we're in an open space as a person. We don't quite settle. So it leaves us in a strange way sometimes."
While she finds solace in her quiet moments, Angelina remains adamant that motherhood is the most important part of her life. During a recent appearance on Good Morning America, she was asked about her role in Maria and whether anything in her life compares to Maria's love of singing.
Angelina answered without hesitation: "My motherhood ... . It's my happiness. You can take everything else away from me ... . Nothing else matters."
While her children have taken an interest in working behind the scenes in the movie industry, with Maddox and Pax pursuing work in film and Vivienne recently assisting with her mother's Broadway show The Outsiders, none of her kids are currently seeking the limelight.
"None of my children want to be in front of the camera at this time," Angelina explained. "They are quite private. Shiloh's extremely private. They weren't born with privacy, right? So I hope they can have that as they grow."
Though Angelina has already won an Academy Award for her role in Girl, Interrupted, the actress is once again generating Oscar buzz for Maria. However, she insists the experience of working on the film itself is reward enough.
When asked about the growing Oscar chatter, Angelina smiled and shared with Best UK Magazine, "It means a lot that somebody thinks you did a good job. Right? That means everything to me. That kind of stuff is exciting and very, very nice. But I'm just so happy we were able to do this film. I'm genuinely so happy."
She continued, "I know it sounds like people say this, but, really, this was an experience of a lifetime. I learned to sing and I embodied a woman that I respect. I was able to work with this extraordinary team of people. I feel like I've already been given the greatest gift. The audience seemed to respond well to it. So, anything else is a dream, but I'm so grateful already."
